SSD Description
The Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1TB represents the maturation of the PCIe 3.0 NVMe standard, utilizing Samsung’s proprietary Phoenix controller (S4LR020) paired with 1GB of LPDDR4 DRAM for table mapping. Originally architected with Samsung's 5th Generation (9x-layer) 3-bit MLC (TLC) V-NAND, the drive achieves higher write densities and efficiency than the non-Plus predecessor through an expanded Intelligent TurboWrite region. This fully vertically integrated design allows for aggressive firmware optimization, enabling the drive to effectively saturate the PCIe 3.0 x4 bus bandwidth limits.
Key Specifications
- Interface: PCIe Gen 3.0 x4, NVMe 1.3
- Sequential Performance: 3,500 MB/s Read, 3,300 MB/s Write
- Controller: Samsung Phoenix (Original) / Samsung Elpis (2021+ Revisions)
- NAND Flash: Samsung V-NAND 3-bit MLC (TLC); originally V5 (9x-layer), later V6 (1xx-layer) in Elpis variant
- DRAM Cache: 1GB LPDDR4
- Physical Attributes: M.2 2280, Single-sided PCB (universally compatible with thin laptops)
- Security: AES 256-bit hardware encryption, TCG Opal 2.0, Encrypted Drive (IEEE1667)
- Component Revision: Elpis variant (mid-2021) — production shifted to the Elpis controller and V6 NAND; larger SLC cache but a steeper decline in write speeds once the cache is exhausted
- Thermal Management: Phoenix controller runs hot; drive uses a nickel-coated controller and a heat-spreading label, but sustained heavy workloads can trigger Dynamic Thermal Guard earlier without a dedicated heatsink or adequate airflow
Hardware Alternatives
- WD Black SN750: The primary direct competitor during the drive's peak relevance. The SN750 uses a proprietary SanDisk controller and offers similar read/write consistency but generally operates at lower temperatures than the 970 EVO Plus.
- SK Hynix Gold P31: A later-generation PCIe 3.0 competitor. The P31 matches the 970 EVO Plus in bus saturation but utilizes 128-layer 4D NAND to achieve significantly higher power efficiency, making it technically superior for battery-dependent mobile applications.
- Samsung 980 PRO 1000GB: The Gen 4 successor. Later revisions of the 970 EVO Plus share the Elpis controller architecture with the 980 PRO, essentially functioning as down-binned or firmware-restricted versions of the newer hardware.
