The Samsung 990 EVO represents a significant architectural shift for the company’s mainstream lineup, utilizing the proprietary Piccolo controller (S4LY022) fabricated on a 5nm process. The drive uses a DRAM-less architecture with Host Memory Buffer (HMB) support and Samsung V-NAND TLC media, and implements a hybrid interface as a PCIe 4.0 x4 drive that can also operate natively as a PCIe 5.0 x2 link state to reduce lane usage on compatible platforms. Thermal efficiency is strong due to the 5nm controller and lack of onboard DRAM, but sustained write performance can drop once the pseudo-SLC cache is exhausted.
