Questions
What do K, F, KF, KS and T mean in Intel model names?
K models are unlocked for overclocking. F models have no integrated graphics and need a graphics card, and KF models are unlocked without integrated graphics. KS models are special editions of K models with higher boost clocks. T models are lower-power versions with a 35 W base power. The 14600KF is $232.08 and the 14600K is $249.99. The 13100F is $119.10 and the 13100 is $113.99.
Why do some LGA1700 CPUs have fewer threads than twice their cores?
12th, 13th and 14th generation Core CPUs combine performance cores (P-cores), which run two threads each, with efficient cores (E-cores), which run one. The Core i5-14400F has 10 cores and 16 threads: 6 P-cores and 4 E-cores. Some models, such as the Core i3-14100F, have P-cores only.
Why are 13th and 14th generation CPUs both listed as Raptor Lake?
Raptor Lake is Intel's code name for both generations; 14th generation models are a refresh of 13th generation. 12th generation models are Alder Lake. The first two digits of the model number give the generation: the Core i5-12400 is 12th generation and the Core i5-14600K is 14th.
Are 13th and 14th generation Core CPUs affected by instability?
Some are. Intel found that elevated voltage can degrade 13th and 14th generation desktop Core CPUs with a base power of 65 W or more, including K and non-K models, causing crashes. 12th generation CPUs are not affected. Intel's microcode fixes, installed with a motherboard BIOS update, prevent further damage but do not repair a CPU that is already unstable. Intel extended the warranty on affected CPUs by two years.
Does LGA1700 use DDR4 or DDR5?
Either, depending on the motherboard. 12th, 13th and 14th generation Core CPUs support both, but each motherboard has slots for only one type. The DDR4 vs DDR5 guide compares the two.
