The Silicon Power UD85 is an entry-level NVMe storage solution built on a DRAM-less architecture, typically utilizing the Phison PS5019-E19T controller paired with 3D NAND flash. Instead of a dedicated SDRAM cache, the drive employs Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology to use system memory for logical-to-physical address mapping. While the drive negotiates a PCIe 4.0 x4 connection, its throughput is bottlenecked by the controller's four-channel design, resulting in performance that saturates the PCIe 3.0 ceiling rather than fully exploiting PCIe 4.0 bandwidth. Silicon Power maintains a flexible supply chain, so internal components may vary by batch; variations utilizing Maxio controllers have been noted. Due to its conservative speed cap and lack of DRAM, the UD85 generates less waste heat than high-end Gen4 drives and rarely requires a heatsink for typical consumer workloads.
