SSD Description

The Crucial P3 500GB is a PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe drive built on a DRAM-less Phison PS5021-E21T controller using Host Memory Buffer (HMB) to mitigate the lack of onboard DRAM. It pairs that controller with Micron 176-layer 3D QLC NAND and relies on dynamic pseudo-SLC caching for peak throughput. Burst speeds are strong, but sustained writes that exceed the SLC cache can see a sharp performance decline. The Phison E21T controller is manufactured on a 12nm process and the drive runs cool under load. The P3 is a single-sided M.2 2280 with 110 TBW endurance.

Key Specifications

  • Interface: PCIe 3.0 x4 (NVMe 1.4)
  • Sequential Performance: 3500 MB/s Read / 1900 MB/s Write
  • Controller: Phison PS5021-E21T (4-channel, ARM Cortex-R5)
  • NAND Flash: Micron 176-layer 3D QLC
  • DRAM Cache: None (Supports HMB ~64MB)
  • Endurance: 110 TBW (Total Bytes Written)
  • PCB Layout: Single-sided M.2 2280

Hardware Alternatives

  • Crucial P3 Plus 500GB: Immediate hardware relative using the same Phison E21T controller and Micron QLC NAND but with PCIe 4.0 enabled for higher sequential throughput.
  • Solidigm P41 Plus: Direct architectural competitor using 144-layer QLC NAND with a Silicon Motion SM2269XT controller; shares reliance on HMB and aggressive SLC caching.
  • Kingston NV2 500GB: Occupies a similar tier; some units share the Phison controller/QLC pairing while others vary by BOM with different controllers or NAND.
