The Crucial P3 4000GB is a high-capacity NVMe solution designed to saturate the limitations of the PCIe 3.0 interface while maximizing storage density. The drive is built around the Phison PS5021-E21T controller, a 4-channel, DRAM-less architecture that leverages Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology to mitigate the lack of onboard volatile cache. Crucial pairs this controller with Micron’s 176-layer QLC NAND, a configuration that enables 4TB of storage on a single-sided PCB but trades the endurance and sustained write performance of TLC flash for higher density. Field Notes: the P3 relies heavily on a large, dynamic pseudo-SLC cache—spanning roughly 25% of available free space—to mask the native slowness of QLC media. While burst performance is strong, once this cache is exhausted during extended transfer sessions, write speeds drop significantly, often falling below mechanical hard drive limitations (approx. 100 MB/s). Consequently, this drive is widely regarded as a cold storage or game library solution rather than a boot drive for heavy workstation tasks. The Phison E21T controller is noted for high power efficiency, allowing the drive to operate within safe thermal limits without requiring a dedicated heatsink.
