The Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850X 1000GB is a vertically integrated proprietary design using an updated in-house WD G2 controller (20-82-10035-B2) paired with dedicated DDR4 DRAM for mapping table buffering. Western Digital optimized existing Kioxia/WD BiCS5 112-layer 3D TLC NAND by increasing the toggle interface speed to 1600 MT/s to better saturate the PCIe 4.0 bus. The drive is tuned for aggressive random I/O performance and low queue-depth latency to benefit Microsoft DirectStorage APIs and prioritize rapid decompression and streaming of assets. Thermal management is important: the controller can reach thermal throttling thresholds under sustained write workloads without a heatsink or adequate airflow. The drive does not include TCG Opal 2.0 hardware encryption and uses firmware-level "Game Mode 2.0" caching optimizations.
