SSD Description
The Western Digital Blue SA510 2000GB marks a significant architectural departure from its predecessor, the WD Blue 3D, by transitioning to a DRAM-less controller design. The drive utilizes a proprietary SanDisk controller (typically the 20-82-10023-A1) paired with BiCS5 112-layer 3D TLC NAND. Lacking a dedicated DRAM cache for the logical-to-physical mapping table, the SA510 relies on a static SLC cache and aggressive firmware optimization to saturate the SATA III interface. This hardware configuration aligns the SA510 more closely with entry-level designs, prioritizing burst performance over sustained write consistency. The SA510 has been subject to firmware stability advisories; early batches were prone to a critical error causing the drive to report 0MB capacity or become inaccessible on boot, and firmware updates have been released to mitigate this controller-level failure. Additionally, due to the removal of DRAM, large file transfers exceeding the SLC cache buffer produce steeper performance drops compared to the previous generation WD Blue 3D.

Hardware Alternatives
- WD Blue 3D / SanDisk Ultra 3D 2000GB: The older Blue 3D (and its clone, the SanDisk Ultra 3D) features a Marvell controller with dedicated DRAM, offering superior sustained write performance.
- Crucial BX500 2000GB: A direct architectural competitor as a DRAM-less SATA drive; high-capacity revisions of the BX500 frequently utilize QLC NAND whereas the SA510 uses TLC.
- Samsung 870 EVO 2000GB: A primary performance alternative in the SATA tier that retains a DRAM cache, providing higher random I/O performance and latency consistency.
