SSD Description
The Samsung 990 PRO represents the culmination of Samsung’s proprietary PCIe 4.0 architecture, utilizing the in-house Pascal controller manufactured on an 8nm process. This controller is paired with Samsung’s 7th Generation (V7) 176-layer 3D TLC V-NAND and a discrete 2GB LPDDR4 DRAM cache. The drive is engineered to saturate the PCIe 4.0 x4 interface while delivering significant improvements in random read/write IOPS compared to its predecessor, the 980 PRO, targeting latency-sensitive workstation and gaming workloads. Field notes: early production units of the 2TB capacity experienced a firmware anomaly that caused SMART health indicators to degrade rapidly; this was rectified via the generic ISO 1B2QJXD7 firmware update and firmware version should be validated upon installation. Thermal management is handled via a nickel coating on the controller and a heat-spreading label, though the drive can reach thermal throttling thresholds under sustained heavy writes without adequate airflow or a dedicated heatsink.
