The Crucial BX500 is Micron’s entry-level SATA storage solution that uses a DRAM-less architecture to reduce component complexity. It typically pairs a Silicon Motion controller (SM2258XT or SM2259XT) with Micron 3D NAND and relies on pseudo-SLC caching to mask native flash write speeds. Without a dedicated DRAM chip for mapping tables, the drive delivers strong burst performance for light workloads but can suffer significant speed degradation during sustained heavy writes once the SLC cache is exhausted. Early 240GB units shipped with TLC NAND, while newer batches may use QLC NAND without a model-number change, reducing endurance ratings and sustained write performance. The drive uses a plastic enclosure and a single-sided PCB, which can result in higher operating temperatures compared with metal-cased drives.
