SSD Description

The SanDisk Extreme M.2 NVMe SSD (2TB) uses an in-house proprietary architecture developed by Western Digital with a DRAM-less controller that leverages Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology. By accessing a small portion of system RAM for address mapping tables, the drive eliminates the need for dedicated onboard SDRAM while maintaining low latency. The controller is paired with BiCS 112-Layer TLC NAND, creating a configuration optimized for mid-range PCIe 4.0 throughput and power efficiency. This SKU is a hardware twin to the Western Digital WD_BLACK SN770, sharing the same firmware baseline and physical layout. The controller employs an aggressive static and dynamic SLC caching strategy for strong burst performance, though sustained writes beyond the cache will drop to native TLC speeds. The drive is noted for excellent thermal management and often operates within safe temperature ranges without a dedicated heatsink.

Hardware Alternatives

  • Western Digital WD_BLACK SN770 2000GB: direct hardware relative and essentially a rebadged version with identical internal components, endurance ratings, and performance profiles
  • Lexar NM790 2000GB: direct competitor in the high-performance DRAM-less segment, using the Maxio MAP1602 controller and YMTC NAND with similar HMB reliance
  • Samsung 990 EVO 2000GB: competes in the same functional tier as a DRAM-less, mid-range PCIe 4.0/5.0 hybrid solution targeting the balance between entry-level NVMe storage and enthusiast-class drives with dedicated DRAM
