SSD Description
The Western Digital Blue SN580 is Western Digital's mainstream Blue-tier upgrade to PCIe 4.0. It uses a DRAM-less, vertically integrated design with an in-house SanDisk controller and SanDisk/Kioxia BiCS5 112-layer 3D TLC NAND. The drive relies on Host Memory Buffer (HMB) to cache look-up tables in host RAM and implements nCache 4.0 hybrid SLC caching; when the cache is exhausted it falls back to direct-to-TLC writing while maintaining respectable folding speeds. The design is a down-clocked, power-optimized variation of the WD Black SN770 platform and is thermally efficient for airflow-restricted environments.

- Sequential Read/Write: 4,150 MB/s / 4,150 MB/s
- DRAM Cache: None (HMB Support)
- Physical Characteristics: Single-sided M.2 2280 PCB
- Endurance: 900 TBW (Total Bytes Written) for the 2TB model
Hardware Alternatives
- Western Digital WD_BLACK SN770 2000GB: Shares the same controller architecture and NAND pedigree but is tuned for higher clock speeds and wider bandwidth (up to 5,150 MB/s), acting as the unlocked version of the platform.
- Samsung 990 EVO 2000GB: Competes in the DRAM-less PCIe 4.0 mid-range sector and offers a hybrid PCIe 4.0 x4 / 5.0 x2 interface; targets similar workload profiles with comparable sequential limits.
- Crucial P3 Plus 2000GB: Uses QLC NAND, resulting in lower endurance and less consistent sustained write performance compared with the SN580.
