SSD Description

The Silicon Power Ace A55 is a commodity-grade SATA SSD that uses a DRAM-less architecture and relies on pseudo-SLC caching for burst performance. Silicon Power acts as an aggregator rather than a vertically integrated manufacturer, so the drive does not have a fixed bill of materials and typically employs entry-level controllers such as the Silicon Motion SM2258XT, SM2259XT, or Phison S11. The NAND is generally 3D TLC, but foundry and layer count vary by batch, so performance depends on the specific controller-flash pairing. Field notes from hardware communities report wide component variability across retail samples (including Phison, Yeestor, or Maxio controllers). Because the drive is DRAM-less, heavy sustained writes can quickly saturate the SLC cache, causing write speeds to fall sharply—often below mechanical HDD speeds—once the sustained write threshold is exceeded.

Key Specifications

  • Interface: SATA III (6Gb/s)
  • Sequential Read/Write: 500 MB/s Read / 450 MB/s Write
  • Controller: Variable (Commonly SMI SM2258XT, Phison S11, or comparable DRAM-less variants)
  • NAND Type: 3D TLC (Micron, Toshiba, or Intel depending on revision)
  • DRAM Cache: None (DRAM-less)
  • Form Factor: 2.5-inch 7mm standard
  • Feature Set: SLC Caching mechanism, Bad Block Management, ECC (Error Correction Code)

Hardware Alternatives

  • Kingston A400: This is the most direct architectural clone; like the A55, the A400 is DRAM-less, frequently uses the Phison S11 controller, and undergoes similar component revisions.
  • Crucial BX500: A primary competitor in the entry-level SATA tier; shares the DRAM-less controller design (usually Silicon Motion) and has seen revisions using QLC NAND while the A55 has historically favored TLC.
  • ADATA SU650: Shares the same target demographic and technical constraints, relying on variable controller sourcing and SLC caching to mask native NAND speeds.
