The HP FX700 1000GB is a DRAM-less NVMe drive built around the Maxio MAP1602 controller paired with YMTC 232-layer 3D TLC NAND. It uses Host Memory Buffer (HMB) to offset the lack of onboard DRAM, letting the drive access a portion of system RAM for address mapping. The design targets high throughput on the PCIe 4.0 interface while keeping a lower power envelope thanks in part to the controller's 12nm process node. The drive manages thermal output with a thin graphene-coated thermal pad and a single-sided PCB layout, and it relies on a dynamic pseudo-SLC cache, so sustained write performance can degrade once that cache is exhausted during extended heavy transfers.
