SSD Description

The Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850X is a refined iteration of Western Digital’s vertically integrated architecture, using the proprietary 20-82-10035-B2 controller paired with BiCS5 112-layer 3D TLC NAND. It includes a dedicated DDR4 DRAM cache for logical-to-physical address translation and consistency during mixed random I/O typical of OS and workstation workloads. A notable engineering distinction for the 4000GB model is its single-sided M.2 2280 PCB layout, which improves compatibility with ultra-thin laptops. Thermal management is improved over the original SN850, but the drive still produces significant waste heat under sustained writes and can thermal throttle in airflow-restricted environments without a heatsink. Game Mode 2.0 uses firmware heuristics to predict and pre-fetch data, reducing read latency in specific access patterns.

Key Specifications

  • Interface: PCIe 4.0 x4 / NVMe 1.4
  • Controller: WD Proprietary (20-82-10035-B2)
  • NAND Flash: Kioxia/WD BiCS5 112-Layer TLC
  • DRAM Cache: Yes (DDR4)
  • Sequential Read: 7,300 MB/s
  • Sequential Write: 6,600 MB/s
  • Endurance (TBW): 2,400 TBW
  • Physical Layout: Single-sided M.2 2280

Hardware Alternatives

  • Samsung 990 Pro: The direct vertically integrated competitor; both drives trade blows in random 4K read performance at low queue depths, utilizing proprietary controllers and in-house NAND.
  • SK hynix Platinum P41: Competes in the same performance bracket with its proprietary Aries controller and 176-layer NAND, offering high power efficiency, though it is less commonly found in the 4TB capacity tier.
  • Phison E18-based drives (e.g., Kingston KC3000, Seagate FireCuda 530): These represent the standard high-end reference design alternative. While they offer similar sequential saturation, the SN850X typically demonstrates lower latency in random workloads due to WD's specific firmware tuning.
