SSD Description

The Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850X 1000GB is a vertically integrated proprietary design using an updated in-house WD G2 controller (20-82-10035-B2) paired with dedicated DDR4 DRAM for mapping table buffering. Western Digital optimized existing Kioxia/WD BiCS5 112-layer 3D TLC NAND by increasing the toggle interface speed to 1600 MT/s to better saturate the PCIe 4.0 bus. The drive is tuned for aggressive random I/O performance and low queue-depth latency to benefit Microsoft DirectStorage APIs and prioritize rapid decompression and streaming of assets. Thermal management is important: the controller can reach thermal throttling thresholds under sustained write workloads without a heatsink or adequate airflow. The drive does not include TCG Opal 2.0 hardware encryption and uses firmware-level "Game Mode 2.0" caching optimizations.

Key Specifications

  • Interface: PCIe 4.0 x4 / NVMe 1.4
  • Sequential Speeds: 7300 MB/s (Read) / 6300 MB/s (Write)
  • Controller: WD Proprietary (20-82-10035-B2)
  • NAND Type: Kioxia/WD BiCS5 112-Layer 3D TLC
  • DRAM Cache: Yes (DDR4)
  • Physical Traits: Single-sided M.2 2280 PCB (high compatibility for laptops)
  • Encryption: No hardware-based TCG Opal support

Hardware Alternatives

  • Samsung 990 Pro: The direct architectural rival. Both drives maximize PCIe 4.0 limits using in-house controllers and DRAM, though the 990 Pro utilizes 176-layer V-NAND.
  • SK hynix Platinum P41: Competing proprietary design known for superior power efficiency, though the SN850X generally offers higher burst throughput.
  • Seagate FireCuda 530: Represents the Phison E18 reference design competitors; while they offer similar sequential speeds, the SN850X typically demonstrates lower latency in random read operations.
  • Kingston KC3000: Another Phison E18 reference design competitor with similar sequential speeds.
